It’s So Foggy!

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. Psalm119:18 (ESV)

We are having a heat wave in Arnot, PA with an outside temperature of 45°! After a spell of minus and single digits, this is a welcomed change. However, it has produced some fog, and I am unable to see very far.

What is certain today without being able to see? Well, I can make out the outline of my car in the driveway. The birds are at all the feeders—I can hear them chattering. The house is warm and cozy—I can feel it. The ground is soppy—I felt the squishy water and mud under my feet when I picked up the empty corn cobs. I smell my fresh cup of coffee. But the real problem is that visibility is limited. Most importantly, I am absolutely certain that I am loved!

Do we ever get that foggy feeling in our spiritual life? I know that I do and I’m never quite sure what causes it. What seemed right yesterday does not feel right today. Then I enter that dangerous area where I cannot see anything clearly. It’s kind of like my mind and heart’s vision is distorted.

When experiencing this kind of fog, the best we can do is cling tightly to the promises that He has made. These are the times that we wait and pray. If we slash through the haze, one never knows what is hidden out there. Chances are there will be regrets attached to those decisions. The mist can conceal those things which are harmful and evil.

He cautions us: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10 (ESV)

He encourages us to Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7 (ESV)

Do you see where I’m going with this? Perhaps the fog is part of Satan’s plan to derail us. If he can get our attention (and keep it), he can do some serious damage. That is why I believe it is so important to hold on for dear life.

There is good news about fog; it does not stay forever. It will all eventually clear and be replaced by the sun. When we allow Him to open our eyes, the Son is always shining!

Heavenly Father, thank You for this day and help us never to lose sight of You. Teach us to hold Your words close to our hearts. AMEN.
