That Is Not What I Wanted

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Ephesians 6:10 (ESV)

We all have a comfort zone. Yes, this is the place where we feel good, strong, secure and at ease. What happens if we never explore outside the ‘zone’? Well, we will miss some special opportunities and events—things we could have successfully done and enjoyed.

Faith building happens when we decide to slay the giants. So many times, I’ve said, “I don’t want to do that because I don’t know how.” Looking at a 15-passenger van, I’ve pooh-pooed the idea of ever driving it because it is simply too big. Then I was told, “I need your help. Will you please drive this?”

When friendship and fear collide, it sets in motion new life experiences. I could have told my friend, “No, not in this lifetime will I ever drive a vehicle that big! Just give me a small van or even a car to drive for you.” But I heard the urgency in his voice. I immediately began doubting myself and putting myself down for not being eager to help. My prayers started immediately thereafter.

ME: Jesus, help me! I don’t know how to do this. It’s dark outside and I can’t even see the dashboard to find the lights.

JESUS: You have a cell phone. Turn it on.

ME: I need a ladder to get into this monster.

JESUS: Grab the steering wheel. Pull yourself up.

ME: No, I can’t do this. I am afraid!

JESUS: Please step aside and get out of your own way.

ME: What about the deer that run and jump across the road?

JESUS: I’ll speak to them.

ME: Wait… if You can speak to deer, why can’t You get me out of this situation. This is not what I wanted.

JESUS: Let’s go! You can do this, and you will.

ME: Can You do it for me?

JESUS: (sigh…) My precious child let’s go!

Guess what! I did it and enjoyed it. The next morning was such a wonderful ride through the countryside to deliver three children to school a few towns away.

I did it! We did it.

Things That I’m Afraid Of

Loving Father, thank You for Your continuous loving presence and for pushing me out of my comfy nest. I can’t imagine life without You! Give me the strength and courage to confront my fears. AMEN.
