A Spiritual Résumé

Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. John 12:37 (NIV)

A résumé should give others a good snapshot of who you are and what you can do! During my life experience, I have seen some mismatches. People have so desperately wanted employment that they were not honest. What a hot mess that always turns out to be. Perhaps we are all capable of that. But there is One who cannot lie; His attributes are endless. Karen Sargent (Mornings with Jesus) explains how He is overqualified for any job we might have.

“Will you help me update my résumé?” my daughter asked. She had completed her first year in an entry-level position and was ready for her next career step. The one-page résumé she had prepared right out of college had a lot of white space, listing basic skills, parttime jobs, and not work history in her career field.

She updated her employment information and added new skills to the résumé. She briefly described major projects she’s completed and the computer programs she’d mastered. Very quickly, the white space disappeared as she presented evidence to convince a future employer that she was qualified for the job she desired.

I wonder how often Jesus has to convince me He is qualified to do the job. Remember that time when you prayed for direction? Or when you asked Me to walk with you through that illness? Or when you needed to be rescued? Perhaps I’m too focused on the problem in front of me to look back at Jesus’s history and qualifications. Sometimes, in spite of my Savior’s impressive résumé, I doubt He can or will do the job. Or I foolishly think I can do it better myself.

When I shift my eyes onto Jesus and consider the work He has done for me and in me, I have no doubt He is the only one qualified, if not overqualified, to fulfill every need I will ever have.

FAITH STEP: Make a résumé for Jesus by listing everything He has done in your life. When you face uncertainty, review His work history, and trust Him to do the job.

Same God

Heavenly Father, thank You for who You are and what You do. We are eternally grateful that You do not change. Please remind us that Your résumé is perfect and complete. AMEN.
