From Cradle to College
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 3:14-15
Our children and grandchildren are headed for college! Hooray! Oh no, wait, this can’t be happening! There is such a mixture of pride and sadness. The time has come for them to leave the family nest and try their wings. Of course, they’ll fly back but from that last glance back, they will be changed forever.
With an anxious heart and tears streaming down mama’s check, she waves goodbye again and again. Once in the car, the dam breaks and everyone cries with her. Everything is now different. Dad wipes his tears and tries to comfort them all, but it can’t be done. He finally decides it is time to start the drive home.
No one talks but all sniffle. The Kleenex box is passed around the car. Finally, someone starts with “I remember the time when he…., and Dad, you were so angry! But we all laughed.” And it continues. All the good memories start rolling and before long, the tears stop. Good times have been remembered and shared.
The young adult has been prepared for this moment. He has been taught right from wrong, and the song Jesus Loves Me has been indelibly been written on his heart.
The separation anxiety of the college freshman is off the charts. I need my family! Yes, but you are taking your family with you. Now you will experience freedom with boundaries, God’s boundaries that you have been taught by your family, friends, and the church family. Use them! They are your life support and you will need them.
From the cradle to your first day of college you have been gently nudged toward your purpose. It’s getting closer. Parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins will always love you. We all are in your corner, so proud of you!
Parents, it’s a new day. This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it (Psalm 118:24 (NIV).
Father God, please protect our children and Yours. AMEN.
