The Paws of God

“If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Mark 9:23 (NIV)

Throughout my life, I’ve known several black Labs and they have all been gentle giants who give sloppy kisses. Lucy Chambers (All God’s Creatures) shares a heart-warming story of building trust. We can be the hand of God for others—just like Ruby.

Our black Lab, Ruby, goes to a wonderful school where she serves as a coach to younger dogs. The trainers are remarkable in how well they understand what dogs need and how to communicate with them. Recently, they called and asked if Ruby could come in on a day she was not scheduled to coach. A shy Lab boy was scared to venture into the Fit Paws area where the dogs learn how to climb on different surfaces and go around obstacles. This fear was keeping him from enjoying his time at school The trainers thought Ruby could help him.

When we picked her up that afternoon, everyone was ecstatic. Ruby was wagging her tail, the shy boy was licking her, and his person was relieved that school was not scary anymore. The trainers explained what had happened: They introduced the two dogs outside, and they became friends. The boy liked Ruby and enjoyed playing with her. When they opened the doors to the Fit Paws room—one of Ruby’s favorite places—she bounded in and started working the course. He saw how delighted she was to be there, and he trusted her and followed. Once his new friend showed him the way, he was able to enjoy all the aspects of the school, and they had a great day.

Ruby’s ability to help her new friend reminds me that all of us—humans and Labs, other animals, and other organisms—are put here to work together, according to God’s beautiful design. When I am feeling like the shy dog, I need to trust God and the community He has provided for me. When I do, the world opens up, offering increased joy. And just as Ruby lent a paw to help her friend overcome his challenges, I can be the hand of God for others.

Trust the past to God’s mercy, the present to God’s love and the future to God’s providence.  —Augustine of Hippo

I Trust Jesus

Loving Lord, thank You for being with us even when we don’t completely trust You or feel Your Presence. You have never let us down and You never will. AMEN.
