The One Who Overcomes
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world! John 16:33
This passage puts us into two places at once. In the middle of a storm and resting in the peace of God. Trouble and the peace of God are not mutually exclusive.
Have you ever thought this way – “I can’t possibly face the day”? I have. If you haven’t, please share your secret with me and the many others who have felt as I have. When we read “the world” in scripture it generally means the physical world in which we can see and experience a litany of troubles: disease, hunger, anger, sin, hate, and death. Jesus actually demonstrates in the gospels His power to remedy trials and tribulations through His many miracles. I think when He speaks of overcoming the world, He is not just speaking of our ultimate salvation but to encourage us that He is present to deliver heaven’s peace here and now.
Today we all find ourselves in a continuing storm – the war in Ukraine, financial concerns, COVID’s continued presence and drought in so many areas of the world. People are afraid and that fear is leading to our calling on and seeking God’s hand to pull us through. Do you feel overwhelmed? That very feeling can lead us to do what God wants us to do – to always rely on Him. Discovering the need for Jesus is one of the great blessings from God. Jesus said to Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness”. In admitting our weakness in the times of trial, we affirm God’s strength.
Father God, thank You for these words of comfort and assurance, of peace in all the trials and tribulations of each day. Thank You that I have nothing to fear, I’m confident of Jesus’ ultimate victory over all the brokenness in this world, Amen.
