The Gentleness of God

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. James 3:17 (ESV)

Think about the snow we had just a few weeks back. The white stuff was beautiful but navigation in it—well, often ugly. The icicles elongate and bring the branches lower and lower. Nature makes a way as I’ve also seen the little birds go to them for something to drink and return to peck away at the feeders.

When we have just a gentle snow it is a reminder of His sovereignty and presence. I am told that there have been severe snow and ice storms, disrupting power and normalcy but to date, we have not had a severe storm of any kind…yet!

Gentleness abounds in this day. However, in these times, I sometimes struggle to see His tenderness as the headlines and media don’t match that perception. Does anyone else see this as a slippery issue?

Yes, there are going to be the blizzards and ice storms during our lives but those are infrequent; as there are far more precious, caring moments. The dew on a spider web, the smell of a spring rain, the changing of seasons, the hug from a loved one all point to His loving passion for His creation.

For my own peace of mind, I must believe that He is gentle. When we act up, He may seem a little rough when trying to get our attention—at least it feels that way. If we are chastised, we may say, “Ouch!” but perhaps it is well deserved by our stubborn attitude and behavior.

As I feed my deer, I often look into their eyes. I see their gentle nature and often wonder what they think of me. I provide food for the pregnant does, but God gives me the resources to offer them something to eat. Maybe some of us are simply gentle souls.

What would it take for our world to experience one kindhearted day or hour? When I can’t describe something, it makes it difficult to turn it into a reality. However, I do believe that we can become more Christ-like and learn to be gentle.

I Believe

Heavenly Father, teach us Your ways. Our lives are crying out for gentleness in all areas. Please hear our prayers. AMEN.
