A Miniature Marvel

Everything was created through him; nothing—not one thing!—came into being without him. John 1:3 (MSG)

Although it might be strange hearing me say this, it is true! My favorite store in the whole wide world is Tractor Supply Company. When I walk in the front door, I am carried back in time to my childhood days on the farm, when my father stopped for chicken and cow feed at the GLF or Agway. The smell is the conduit connecting me with the past. Randy Benedetto (All God’s Creatures) only enhances my old, yet familiar childhood memories of God’s greatness.

I love farm-supply stores, especially in the spring, when I watch newly hatched chicks flutter and chirp under the warm lights in tin watering troughs that have been converted into incubators. Everything about them is tiny—from their bright eyes and pointy beaks to their fuzzy bodies and orange feet. Yet their brains, as small as they are, have been programmed to keep all the newly formed organs working properly.

Our Creator even designed a special tool for the baby chick that disappears soon after it is born. Called the egg tooth, it is a sharp projection on the end of the beak that has a special purpose. A developing chick gets its air from thousands of air holes in the shell of the egg. When the chick is ready to hatch, it needs more air than the holes in the eggshell can supply. The chick uses its egg tooth to poke a hole in a large bubble of air at the big end of the egg. This sack will supply the chick with air while it uses the egg tooth to break free from the shell.

As I watched the feathery chicks pecking for food, I marveled at this brilliant tool. How does the chick know to start pecking at the part of the shell that holds the air supply? The great Designer planned it that way!

If God took so much care in creating a chick, I can’t imagine how He feels about me! God has planned every day of our live and given us everything we need.

Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration—what a creation! You know me inside and out. Psalm 139:14-15 (MSG)
